Ingredients

  • 1 lb beef liver about 450 g, tough membrane trimmed

Method

  1. Rinse the liver, pat it dry and freeze for about an hour so it slices cleanly.
  2. Cut into strips about 1/4 inch thick, trimming any tough membrane.
  3. Simmer the strips in plain water or bake them until a thermometer reads 160°F (71°C).
  4. Dehydrate at 140°F or higher for 6 to 8 hours, until fully dry and the pieces snap.
  5. No dehydrator? Use the oven's lowest setting with the door propped open for 3 to 4 hours, flipping once.
  6. Snip into pieces about the size of a pinky fingernail.

Notes

Calories are estimates from USDA FoodData Central values. Keep all treats to about 10% of your dog's daily calories. Liver is very rich in vitamin A, so give only a few tiny pieces a day. Refrigerate 1 to 2 weeks or freeze up to 3 months.
